SOAS fully reinstates Sanctuary Scholarship scheme

23 May 2022

SOAS University of London has committed to reinstating seven Sanctuary Scholarships for refugee and asylum seeker students from the 2022/23 academic year. SOAS will also increase the maintenance loan for Sanctuary Scholars from £6,000 to £12,000.

The SOAS Sanctuary Scholarship scheme to support displaced students was established in 2015. The scholarships were reduced to two from seven during a period of change at SOAS. At the end of March 2022, the Scholarships Committee approved a supplementary budget to reinstate the scholarships to the original seven.

The SOAS Sanctuary Scholarship Scheme provides young displaced people with the opportunity to begin their studies at SOAS. It is designed to support those who might otherwise be blocked from embarking on a university degree, especially those with precarious forms of immigration status or who do not have access to Student Finance, and people taking their first steps into Higher Education.

SOAS will cover the cost of tuition fees for seven Sanctuary Scholarships – six for undergraduates and one for postgraduates.
