The SOAS Centre for Sustainable Finance hosted an event discussing challenges and opportunities for climate and sustainable finance for a group of 50 current students, recent graduates and faculty of Strathmore University, Kenya.
Prof Claire Ozanne, the SOAS Deputy Director and Provost, welcomed the group, sharing SOAS's vision for the coming years and highlighting the School's approach to tackling global challenges such as the climate crisis. Dr Harald Heubaum, the Deputy Director of the SOAS Centre for Sustainable Finance, then spoke about the importance of understanding and adequately addressing climate risk across government, businesses and investors, emphasising the urgent need to strengthen adaptation and resilience building in highly climate-vulnerable countries such as Kenya.
Conversations revolved around climate-related financial disclosure, physical and transition risks for Kenya's power and transportation sectors, challenges for forestry and nature-based solutions across sub-Saharan Africa, achieving a just transition, and the need for businesses to translate ESG commitments into action.
Strathmore University is a leading private non-profit university in Nairobi, Kenya. The event formed part of a week-long study tour to London and Oxford during which students and staff met with financial institutions and leading universities in the climate and sustainable finance space.
