Mapping Provision and Matching Needs of Community Language Speakers in Higher Education

18 July 2007

This event was organised by CETL and Scottish CiLT and brought together stakeholders from various sectors linked or involved with community languages for a day of keynote speakers. Professor Viv Edwards from University of Reading argued that knowledge of other languages is not a matter of rationing or prioritisation: multilingualism is an asset and resource, not a problem to be solved, and Professor Lei Wei from Birkbeck, University of London critically examined the tensions between community, national and global needs with reference to dominant politico-economic agenda and the promotion of certain languages over others.

There was also discussion of the interim findings of the first stage of a project which was to create ‘A Map of Community Language Provision in English HEIs’ and a series of workshops.
