SOAS University of London

Towards a Greener Estate - The SOAS recycling initiative

1 March 2010
SOAS Recycling Initiative

We are improving our recycling provision across our campus by providing more sites for staff and students to recycle a range of materials.

New recycling sites are being set up which will split waste into three main streams:

  1. Paper & Cardboard based recyclables (Green Lid)
  2. Plastic bottles, cans and plastic/metal recyclables (Yellow Lid)
  3. General Waste – non-recyclables (Grey Lid)

Confidential Waste: where required (in offices) there will also be a fourth bin of the same design with a red colour-coded swing-lid for confidential waste.

Glass: for the time being glass will continue to be recycled via the existing points in the catering and bar areas and the bottle banks at the front of the College building.

Having conducted an extensive site survey we will be introducing this first round of recycling points in the most active campus wide sites first.

With regards to the refurbishment of the Student Union and the Library Transformation Project we will attempt to cover any areas of relocation and rotate the recycling points along with the work on the Library.

As always, their success in reducing SOAS landfill will be down to everyone joining in to ensure that they are correctly used.

This initiative is the result of collaboration between the Students’ Union Green Society and the Estates & Facilities Directorate.

Any feedback on improving the service should be sent to:
