British Foreign Office Minister Alistair Burt will give the keynote address at the Sixth London Conference on a Middle East Weapons of Mass Destruction Free Zone, to be held at SOAS on 24 October. The annual conference is hosted by the Centre for International Studies and Diplomacy (CISD).
Alistair Burt, MP, is the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, with responsibility for the Middle East and for counter-proliferation.
The weapons-free zone is to be the subject of a UN-backed conference in 2012, and the SOAS conference is part of the public process building to that event.
"The conference series has been recognised by the international community as contributing to the creation of an official process on this intractable topic," said CISD Director Dr Dan Plesch. "Student participation has been vital and is a credit to the CISD students who support centre staff in engaging one of the most intimidating issues on the international agenda."
The CISD conference will be held at SOAS' Brunei Gallery Lecture Theatre. Bookings will open in mid-September, and the public are invited to attend. Booking information will be posted on the SOAS and CISD websites in September.
