lluminating Objects is a pilot programme of The Courtauld Gallery which aims to shine new light on unexpected objects from the decorative arts and sculpture collections, through partnerships with SOAS, King’s College, London, the University of Kent in Canterbury, University College, London and Imperial College.
Tanja Tolar is the first SOAS PhD student to start this internship. She is working on one of the very fine so-called Spanish-Islamic lustre ware objects that are part of the Courtauld non-European collection. The object will go on display in a case especially designed for the "Illuminating Objects" project and Tanja will write on it for both the Gallery and the website. She will also present her research at one of the SOAS Research Seminars in Islamic Art.
"Illuminating Objects" is a wonderful initiative and an example of inter-institutional collaboration. It will provide interns with valuable experience in focusing on the study of one object while considering the wider historical and art-historical implications. Each object will remain on display for three months.
