Peter Mollinga presented a (draft) paper titled 'Hydraulic systems as technologies of rule. Wittfogel’s ‘hydraulic society’ concept and Indian canal irrigation' at the European Society for Environmental History conference in Munich, Germany 'Circulation Nature: Water-Food-Energy' (21-14 August 2013). The panel in which it was presented focused on 'Hydraulic societies: Karl Wittfogel's hypothesis on the environment, irrigation and statecraft'. The panel was organised by Prof Vhristine Bicjsel (Univ of Fribiourg, Switzerland) and Prof Julia Obertreis (Univ of Erlangen/Nurnberg, Germany). A follow-up session proposal on 'water, infrastructure and state rule' has been submitted for the World Congress on Environmental History, in Portugal, July 2014.
