SOAS, University of London regrets to announce the death of Professor Keith McLachlan on 12 October 2013. He joined the Department of Economics and Politics in 1962 after completing a PhD in Geography at the University of Durham. He transferred to the newly established Department of Geography in 1966. He made his mark in Middle Eastern studies. His main contributions were on the use and management of energy and other natural resources and especially on rural livelihoods and economics in Iran. He was Chaiman of the SOAS Middle East Centre from 1980 to 1983. He also served on the Council of the British Institute of Persian Studies in a number of capacities. He is remembered very warmly by all his friends and former colleagues at SOAS and also across the world by social scientists for his contributions to Middle Eastern studies.
The funeral will be held at 11.00 am on Monday 21 October 2013 at St Margaret's Church, Main Street, Carsington, Derbyshire, DE4 4DE. The Miners Arms opposite the church has been taken over for the day and will be available from 10.00 am for parking, coffee and amenities. The family will be providing flowers.
