SOAS Centre of Taiwan Studies trials new Virtual Course on Taiwan Women’s History

2 December 2013
Virtual Course on Taiwan Women's History

This term the SOAS Taiwan Studies Centre is offering its students a new optional course taught from Academia Sinica on Taiwan Women’s History. The lecture course is given by Professor Yu Chien-ming (游鑑明) from Academia Sinica’s Institute of Modern History. The lectures and discussion are all in Chinese. The SOAS students are joined by a class at the University of Heidelberg in Germany. The programme is part of a Taiwan Studies lecture series involving SOAS, Heidelberg and is supported by the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation.

The Director of the Centre of Taiwan Studies, Dafydd Fell noted, “The new course offers multiple benefits for our Taiwan Studies students. They can engage with leading scholarship from Taiwan without the expense of these academics coming to Europe. It also allows our students to debate issues with their counterparts in other European universities and thus is part of our goal of developing Taiwan beyond the UK. Lastly, it is a great opportunity for our students to improve their Chinese at the same time as learning about Taiwan.”

Feedback from students attending the virtual course:
“The talks are informative and inspirational. I have learned a lot not only from the lecturer but also the students from Heidelberg especially through the Q&A sessions.”
“The lectures are interesting and enhance our understanding of issues covered in our regular Taiwan studies course.”
