In September 2014, Centre of Islamic and Middle Eastern Law (CIMEL) hosted the launch of a new research programme of the Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies. The three-year CIHRS programme on political Islam and human rights will mostly focus on states in the Arab region but draw also on comparative experience elsewhere. A roundtable on Thursday 25th was convened under the title “The Evolution of the Thought and Practice of Political Islamist Parties after the Arab Spring and their Relationship to International Human Rights Law”. This was followed on Friday 26th by an initial discussion and planning meeting of members of the programme’s consultative council, which includes Professor Lynn Welchman of CIMEL and the School of Law, and Professors Khalid Masud and Ziba Mir-Hosseini, both Research Associates at CIMEL. CIMEL anticipates remaining an active partner in the CIHRS programme in the coming months and years.
