This certificate is an introductory qualification in Persian language. Students acquire a solid initial knowledge of the written and spoken language of modern Iran and study the historical and cultural background of the Middle East. When taken full-time (in one year) it corresponds to the first year of BA programme in Persian. No prior knowledge of Persian is required.
Full-time students:
- Persian Language I (2units),
- Literatures of the Near and Middle East,
- An approved non-language unit. This non-language unit is normally in a relevant subject such as the history of the Middle East or Islamic studies.
Part-time students:
The part-time syllabus allows a fuller engagement with Persian language. Year 1 is devoted the intensive introductory course in Persian Language I (2 units). Students normally follow this with Persian Language II and EITHER Classical Persian Prose Texts OR Persian Poetry 1.
Alternatively, students can take a more gradual path to acquisition of language by enrolling on Elementary written Persian in the first year, followed by Elementary Persian texts in the subsequent year. On this path, two other course-units are chosen from the available options to complete the syllabus.

Entry requirements
- The minimum entry requirement is the ability to demonstrate the potential to study at undergraduate level. However, programmes may have their own specific requirements, such as, in the case of language-based studies, a proven ability to learn a language.
