SOAS celebrates Felix Scholarships

We were honoured to host the annual Felix Scholar’s reception last week welcoming more than 50 guests made up of Felix Scholars from SOAS, University of Reading and University of Oxford. The scholarships are supported by the Felix Scholarship Trust, for postgraduate students.

Launch of Questions worth asking in Lagos

We were delighted to celebrate the launch of the Questions worth asking Campaign in Lagos, Nigeria with a large crowd of alumni, VIP guests and friends. A panel chaired by Dr Emilia Onyema, Senior Lecturer in International Commercial Law at SOAS discussed 'The Girl-Child education in Nigeria: problems and prospects' with Dr Simeon Obidairo, Aisha Muhammed-Oyebode and Aisha Ahmad, and we were honoured to be joined by Professor Wole Soyinka, Nobel Laureate and SOAS Honorary Fellow.

Donation from AXA Research Fund to create a new Professorial post

Professor Victor Murinde has been appointed AXA Professor in Global Finance in the School of Finance and Management at SOAS University of London. This is a new permanent academic position, created by SOAS and endowed by the AXA Research Fund.

Donation towards digitisation of endangered language

We are delighted to have received £2,500 from The Patron’s Fund to support the digitisation of over three hundred interviews carried out by Dr Sarah Stewart, mainly in the Dari language, recorded as part of a research project on contemporary Zoroastrian communities in Iran.

We are grateful to the Khyentse Foundation for a donation to the Centre of Buddhist Studies at SOAS to launch a new programme of public events called Buddhism InsideOut, and to support its ongoing work such as the Buddhist Forum lecture series, which was established in 1987.

Launch of Questions worth asking in New Delhi, India

Baroness Amos, SOAS alumni, friends and other distinguished guests attend the launch of Questions worth asking: the Campaign for SOAS University of London, in New Delhi. The guests were treated to a debate on the question 'Is Diplomacy Dead?' by a panel including Mr C Uday Bhaskar - President of the Society for Policy Studies, SOAS alumnus Alexander Evans - Britsh Deputy High Commissioner for New Delhi, and Dr Hardeep Singh Puri -
Former Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations.

What is the place of religion in the modern world?

A new five-year lecture series in Chinese Buddhism has been launched thanks to a donation from The Robert H N Ho Family Foundation. The lectures will allow a wide audience to approach Chinese Buddhism in its full richness and complexity, and encourage them to contribute their answers to what the place of this ancient religion is in our modern world.

SOAS celebrates scholarships and philanthropy

On the evening of 1 November, around 150 guests - scholars, donors, academics and other friends of the School - gathered to celebrate the impact of scholarships on SOAS and to meet with other scholars and donors. There were speeches from Director of SOAS Baroness Valerie Amos CH along with scholarship recipients Onen David Ongwech from Uganda and Donya Nasser from the US.

New York Launch of SOAS Questions worth asking

We were delighted to launch the Campaign for SOAS in New York last night with Baroness Amos hosting the American Friends of SOAS (AFSOAS), and other alumni, friends and donors. Guests watched our thought provoking campaign film, and heard from David Miliband - President and CEO of the International Rescue Committee and former UK Foreign Secretary, and Laura Hammond - Reader in Development Studies at SOAS, speaking about the international refugee crisis.
