Online registration

Online registration for 2018/19 will open on 27th August 2018, please click here to complete online registration.

If you have not received an email regarding re-enrolment, please let us know by using the online Student Information Desk (SID), select Request a Service and use the category of Enrolment and then "Online Registration Query" and we’ll check your current situation on our records.  Clearance for re-enrolment may be dependent on the submission of documentation to the Doctoral School section.  Progression to the next academic year may be dependent on this.

When you log on to register online, please make sure you complete the following steps:

  • Confirm My Details
  • Career Aspirations
  • Pay Fees

We’ll email you full details on how to complete these sections in the lead up to Welcome Week. Full details will be available on the Online Registration section of this site once the system is available, so check back regularly for any updates.

Enrolling in person

Unless you are on overseas fieldwork that has been approved by the Doctoral School, you have to finish enrolling in person during the first week of the academic year. Without this final step, you won’t be fully enrolled and won't be able to get student discounts or official letters from us.

We will allocate a session for you to do this and email you the details. We allocate the sessions by surname – as you can see in the table below. Coming to the right session will help cut down your waiting time.

Come to room SG32 in the Paul Webley Wing, also known as Senate House North Block.  A map of all SOAS buildings.

If you can’t make your allocated session, we have an Open Enrolment slot on Friday, but you might have to wait longer than usual.

What if I can’t come in to finish enrolment during the first week?

We strongly recommend that you come during your allotted enrolment slot.

If you can’t make it – with good reason – you may attend Late Enrolment at the Doctoral School section at 53 Gordon Square.

Read more in the late enrolment section below.

Essential documents

To enrol, you will need original versions of the following documents. We cannot enrol you without these.

EEA students
  • Passport or EU Nationality Card; or UK Full Driving Licence - if you don’t hold any of these, we might accept other forms of photo ID. Please ask to see the Doctoral School Manager when you arrive in room SG32, who will let you know whether your alternatives are acceptable; and
  • Evidence that you have paid your fees, or evidence of your sponsorship - you should pay your fees or give us your loan/sponsorship details before or during Welcome Week.
Non-EEA students (who made a visa application within the UK)
  • Passport; and
  • Visa (either within your passport or a biometric residence permit (BRP)); and
  • Evidence you’ve paid your fees, or evidence of your sponsorship - you should pay your fees or give us your load/sponsorship details before or during Welcome Week.
Non-EEA students (who made a visa application outside of the UK)
  • Passport; and
  • Visa (either within your passport or a biometric residence permit (BRP)); and
  • Visa Confirmation Letter (which is provided by the UKVI confirming your visa and details for collection of your biometric residence permit (BRP); and
  • Evidence you’ve paid your fees, or evidence of your sponsorship - you should pay your fees or give us your load/sponsorship details before or during Welcome Week.

Due to regulation changes this year, if you have applied for a new visa for this year and you did this from outside of the UK, you will have been provided with a temporary visa in your passport and you must collect your permanent Biometric Residence Permit on arrival from the Post Office listed on your Visa confirmation letter.

You will be able to enrol with the temporary visa, but we must see your Biometric Residence Permit before your temporary visa expires, which will involve returning to the Doctoral School in Gordon Square (from Monday 1st October) with this Permit as soon as you have collected it.  We therefore strongly advise that you collect your Biometric Card before you attend your enrolment session if at all possible, to avoid having to return before your temporary visa expires.

If you’re in the process of applying for a visa, we’ll need to see the following instead:

    • A photocopy of the photo page of your passport; and
    • A photocopy of your current/previous visa; and
    • A copy of your visa application - it should clearly show the type of visa you’ve applied for. If it is for a Tier 4 Student Visa, we will need to see your CAS number and confirmation of our sponsorship. (We suggest you print off and bring the whole document you submitted to the UKVI to ensure we have the evidence we need.)

What if I don’t complete enrolment?

If you don’t complete the enrolment process at the start of the year – and you haven’t been given permission to interrupt your studies – we will withdraw you from the research programme.

NOTE: Students who are on overseas fieldwork between 24 September and 12 October officially approved by the Doctoral School must complete online elements of enrolment except for the in person (ID check) enrolment.

If you fail to enrol and you need a visa to remain in the UK, we are legally obliged to let UK Visa & Immigration (UKVI) know. For you that could mean having your visa curtailed and having to leave the UK.

If you have any worries about completing enrolment, please Request a Service through the Online Student Information Desk (SID), selecting the category of Enrolment and the Request of "Enrolment Query".
