SOAS Alumni & Friends Fund (AFF) Award


The SOAS Alumni & Friends Fund (AFF) Award has been created with the support of SOAS alumni. This award supports UK students who have financial need, have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and have performed work of personal merit in their community. In addition to the cash bursary, recipients of this award are mentored by an alumnus or alumna for six months and will spend a day shadowing their mentor in the workplace.

Application process:

You must apply for means-tested support from your funding authority via When you make your application for student support, you must ensure you give consent for your information to be shared with us. If your parents are submitting their financial information, they must also ensure they give their consent. This will allow us to view your details on a portal at the Student Finance website. The portal will only provide the information we need to assess your entitlement to an Award.

Terms of award:

  • Cash bursary
  • Students must agree to attend the Alumni Friends Fund Event to showcase how the award has helped in their studies
  • Recipients of the SOAS Progression Award or SOAS Excellence Award will be ineligible for the AFF Award
Cash Bursary:

£2,000 in first year, £2,000 in second year or third year (£0 in language year abroad), £2,000 in final year


  • You must have attended a state school, 6th form or FE college in the UK
  • You must be the first in your family to undertake a higher education/university course
  • You must have evidence of outstanding academic merit and outstanding personal merit, including work in the community or voluntary work
  • You must be undertaking your first undergraduate degree (students who currently hold a degree or who are transferring from another Higher Education degree will not be eligible)
  • You must ordinarily be resident in England
  • Your household income must be less than £25,000 as assessed by the Student Finance England (SFE)
  • You must be enrolled full time

Notification and Payment of Award:

SOAS will deposit the cash bursary directly into the successful student's bank account as follows:
