JRC Fuwaku Scholarship

To celebrate the Japanese Research Centre's (JRC) 40th anniversary, the JRC is pleased to announce the JRC Fuwaku Scholarship 2019. There are two JRC Fuwaku Scholarships available. Each Scholarship is valued at £10,000.

Eligible programmes
  • Any full-time MPhil/PhD Student (new admissions and current SOAS MPhil/PhD students) whose thesis topic focusses on any aspect of Japan
  • Any full-time Postgraduate Taught Masters Degree programme with a dissertation on a theme connected with Japan. In addition to taking a minimum of 1.0 units (or equivalent, e.g 2x 0.5 units) on Japan/Japanese studies.  
  • Current Masters students enrolled in Year 1 (of a two-year full-time Masters Degree at SOAS) in 2018-19 and entering Year 2 in 2019-20 are also eligible to apply.
  • Part-time programmes are not eligible
Candidate Criteria
  • Open to UK/EU and Overseas applicants
  • For MPhil/PhD applicants, the research proposal must focus on Japan. Applicants (new admissions, i.e. starting in September 2019) should provide evidence of this in the research proposal of their admission application
  • For Postgraduate Taught Masters Degree applicants must write their dissertation on a theme connected with Japan. Applicants (new admissions, i.e. starting in September 2019) should provide evidence of this in the statement of their admission application. For current Postgraduate Taught Masters Degree should provide evidence of this in their Scholarship application
  • For Postgraduate Taught Masters Degree applicants must take a minimum of 1.0 units (or equivalent e.g 2x 0.5 units) on Japan/Japanese studies. Applicants (new and current) should provide evidence of this in their scholarship application
  • Applicants should include in their scholarship application details of their skills in Japanese. While Japanese language is not essential, it is desirable so it will be helpful if the applicants’ referees comment on their skills in Japanese in the areas of reading, composition and speaking, if applicable. 
  • Applicants (new admissions, i.e. starting in September 2019) must have an offer of admission to a degree programme at SOAS by the scholarships deadline.
  • Applicants (new admissions, i.e. starting in September 2019) must meet the English language condition of their offer of admission to study at SOAS as soon as possible but no later than 1 June 2019. If your offer is conditional on English, please arrange your English test and ensure you meet the English requirements as soon as possible.
Candidate Assessment
  • MPhil candidates will be assessed on academic merit and the strength of their proposal.
  • PhD candidates will be assessed on academic merit, the results of their research during the previous year and proposal.
  • Postgraduate Taught Masters degree candidates: academic references, degree results, statement, and other relevant information in your application will be considered to assess the above criteria.
Scholarship Application Deadline
  • Scholarship Applications must be received no later than 16:00 (UK local time) on 1 May 2019
  • New applicants only (new admissions, starting in September 2019): You must ALSO submit a complete application to your programme as soon as possible and then submit an application for the scholarship.  Applicants applying for scholarships must also submit an application for admission well in advance.  Please note that complete applications for admission can take 4 weeks to be considered by the Department, although this duration can vary depending on the time of year.  You should be prepared to wait up to 6 weeks in busy periods.  It is recommended to apply for the programme about six weeks BEFORE the scholarship deadline (that is, by 20 March 2019).

Notification of Results

Successful candidates will be notified by the end of June.  If you have not heard from us by the end of June, you should assume your application was unsuccessful.

Scholarship Application Procedures

Applicants should follow the following steps

  • STEP 1: Apply for your  programme*

You must submit a COMPLETE on-line application for admission (Taught Masters), (MPhil/PhD)

Applicants must have an offer of admission to a degree programme at SOAS by the scholarship application deadline.  A complete application for admission includes transcripts, an explanation of the grading system for any degrees obtained outside of the UK, two references, CV, a personal statement and a research proposal. The panel will be considering your scholarship application TOGETHER with your online application for admission.  Please note that complete applications for admission can take up to 4 weeks to be considered by the Department, although this duration can vary depending on the time of year.  You should be prepared to wait up to 6 weeks in busy periods.

It is recommended to apply for the programme about six weeks BEFORE the scholarship deadline (that is, by 20 March 2019).

(*IMPORTANT information for current SOAS students only: If you are currently enrolled on a SOAS MPhil/PhD OR on Year 1 of a two-year full-time SOAS Masters in 2018-19, do not complete STEP 1.  You just need to complete STEP 2 below)

  • STEP 2: Apply for the scholarship by 16:00 (UK local time) on 01 May 2019.
