  • 17th Annual Jaina Lecture: Nidāna, A Word with Different Meanings
  • Shin Fujinaga (Myakonojo Kosen, Miyazaki, Japan)
  • As a part of introductory remark of this lecture, an overview of the general meaning of the word nidāna in Buddhism and Jainism as well as in Hindu texts is given, and it is shown how modern scholars understand it

  • The Jains and the Buddhists have distinctive attitudes to religion and knowledge. Their approaches define religion as encompassing all forms of knowledge, including the physical sciences, the humanities and the spiritual journey. Yet, both ancient Indian traditions co-evolved, and mutually influenced each other.
