What is ORCID?
- ORCID provides you with a persistent digital identifier which is unique to you as a researcher and you will have for your entire career.
- ORCID IDs are provided by ORCID (Open Research and Contributor ID), a not for profit international, interdisciplinary organisation created by the research community.

Why should I get an ORCID ID?
- Ensures your research is attributed to you: with an ORCID ID you can ensure information about your research activities (publications, grants and other activities) are correctly associated to you. , This distinguishes you from another researcher of the same name, or if you change your name or have used variations of your name in your research.
- Stays with you throughout your career: Unlike employer IDs or profiles your ORCID record is managed by you and remains with you throughout your career, even if you move to another institution elsewhere in the world. So when you move to a new job you may find you can provide your ORCID ID and your employer can use this to add information to their systems e.g. institutional repository so you don’t have to.
- Recognises that you own your record of contributions: You can maintain all of your key information in one place, and you control item-level privacy settings, including what information is displayed publicly and what information can be shared.
- Prepares you for grant applications: An ORCID iD is now essential when you apply for external funding but also makes life easier as funding application systems are increasingly being connected to ORCID so you can share your CV easily.
- Publisher systems increasingly have a connection with ORCID ID: this means that when you submit a manuscript you will also be asked for your ORCID. This means that when your research is published the information from the publisher is automatically added to your ORCID ID.
How do I get an ORCID ID?
Creating your ORCID iD is free, quick and simple to do. To simply get your ORCID ID it takes just a couple of minute:
- Visit the ORCID registration page
- If your name is already in the ORCID system or you have tried to register with the same email as before ORCID will prompt you to login rather than register.
Can someone else or SOAS create my ORCID iD for me?
No, you need to register for an ORCID iD on your own. However you can designate a Trusted Individual to edit your record on your behalf.
Do I have to add information to my ORCID record?
- No, it is possible to use your ORCID ID as only a unique digital identifier, without adding additional information to your ORCID record.
- It is completely up to you how much information you add and how much is visible publicly.
- It is probably a good idea to add different forms of your name, current affiliation and link to your SOAS web profile at the least.
- Adding fuller details of your publications and past funding awards to your record however, will save you a great deal of time in the future as you can connect this information with increasing numbers of systems e.g. funder application or reporting systems.

How do I add information about my publications to my ORCID record?
- We highly recommend that the first and easiest step you should take is to use the details you already have in SOAS Research Online (see details below.
- You can also provide permissions for ORCID to import articles from sources such as Web of Science and CrossREF through the ‘Link Works’ option. This means that ORCID will pick up future publications automatically but it may not find them all. Selecting CrossREF is a good choice.
- You can also add new works to your ORCID ID manually through the ‘Add Work Manually’ option.
- An automatic link between SOAS Research Online and ORCID records is in development and we will keep you up to date.
How do I add the details I already have in SOAS Research Online to my ORCID record?
It is easy to add your publications from SOAS Research Online directly to your ORCID record in three easy steps:
- Go to SOAS Research Online and use Author/Creator Search in Advanced Search option to bring up all the publications you have authored.
- Use the Export option at the top left of the results list to export as a BibTeX file (select-from the drop down list). Save the BibTeX file on your computer.
- Go to your ORCID record and in the ‘Add Works’ option select ‘Import BibTeX’. Click ‘Choose File’ and find the BibTeX file saved on your computer. You will see the list of your publications appear and click Save Works.
It is worth checking through these and ensuring there are no mistakes or formatting errors and that all the publications. Also at this stage you can remove any duplicates using the delete icon.
How will I use my ORCID ID?
There are a growing number of uses for ORCID IDs but at the moment you will most likely use it:
- when you submit a manuscript to a publisher.
- when you apply for external funding.
- when you want to add your publications to a repository.
- when you want to add your ORCID IDs to your online profiles e.g. your CV, personal website, LinkedIn.
I’ve got two ORCID IDs- what should I do?
If you find that you have duplicate records, contact ORCID directly. It is best to ensure you have only one ID and ORCID can merge your information from two records if necessary.
What happens if I leave SOAS?
Your ORCID iD will always stay the same, and moves with you throughout your career. However, you will need to update the information tied to your ORCID record e.g. your institutional affiliation and your email address.
