Target audience. This session is aimed at Early Career Researchers but more experienced academics who want to refresh their understanding of REF and impact in the REF are also welcome to attend.
Workshop Aims. To learn about REF and impact in the REF.
Specific Objectives. The Research Excellence Framework is the current system for assessing the quality of research in UK Higher Education Institutions. It is the successor to the Research Assessment Exercise. The results of the first Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014) were published in December 2014; preparations for REF 2021 are well under way. Since 2014 Impact has been an explicit a component of the Research Excellence Framework - together with research outputs and environment. Institutions are asked to submit Impact Case Studies (ICSs) to assess the impact of research outside of academia. The REF therefore focuses on external impact - defined as 'an effect on, change or benefit to the economy, society, culture, public policy or services, health, the environment or quality of life, beyond academia'. In REF 2021 impact will account for 25% of the final overall score; up from 20% in REF 2014.
The session aims to provide attendees with an overview of the purpose and general requirements of the Research Excellence Framework- with a focus on its impact component, of the decisions announced about the implementation of REF2021, the School's preparations, and the support available to academic staff.
We will discuss
- the purpose of the REF and its importance to the School
- what needs to be included in a submission (outputs, impact and environment)
- the School's preparations to date
- what is an ICS and its requirements for REF 2021
- what early career researchers and other academics should be doing if they have potential impact-case studies for submission to the next REF
