Any researcher who receives UKRI funding (including PhD researchers) must ensure that their research is made available according to the UKRI Policy on Open Access.

PhD Theses

Doctoral researchers who are funded by the UKRI (ESRC or AHRC) are required by the terms and conditions of the UKRI Training Grant (TGC15) to make their PhD theses Open Access in SOAS Research Online no later than 12 months after award of PhD. SOAS doctoral researchers should read our:

Journal Articles and Conference Proceedings

Follow these steps to ensure you meet UKRI Open Access requirements:

  • 1. Get to Know the UKRI Open Access Requirements and Options
  • 2. Check Your Potential Publishers Meet UKRI Requirements
    • Use the SHERPA Fact Database to check the Open Access options of your potential journal
    • If your journal isn’t listed write to outputs@soas.ac.uk before you submit your paper so that we can check with the publisher
  • 3. Upload your accepted publication to SOAS Research Online
    • Enter a record in SOAS Research Online (including Funder details) along with the accepted version of your publication
  • 4. Apply for UKRI Open Access Fund

    The UKRI Open Access fund also known as the Block Grant is here to support researchers funded by the Research Councils (AHRC, EPSRC, ESRC, NERC) in publishing via the Gold Open Access route. This fund can be used by both academics and PhD students who are in receipt of funding. This fund can be used for Journal Articles and a single book chapter with a DOI.

    • Read our Terms of Reference for the UKRI Open Access Block Grant
    • Fill in our online application form to access UKRI funds for Open Access (researchers should ensure this is filled in before an article is published)
  • 5. Make Sure You Include an Acknowledgement of Your Funding
    • Include a full statement acknowledging your funding from the UKRI e.g. “This work is supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. Project title; dates; UKRI award no. eg. [AH/K000179/1]
  • 6. Include a Statement About the Research Data that Underpins Your Research
