Among the six early works of Thai literature, Thawathotsamat (Twelve Months) is the least well-known, perhaps because its language is hard to understand, perhaps because its eroticism is hard to take. The author may have been a late 15th century king. Chris Baker and Pasuk Phongpaichit present their translation-in-progress and thoughts on this poem’s many meanings.
Chris Baker and Pasuk Phongpaichit have written widely on Thailand’s political economy, history, and literature including Unequal Thailand, A History of Thailand, A History of Ayutthaya, and The Tale of Khun Chang Khun Phaen. In 2017 they were awarded the Fukuoka Grand Prize.
