Among the six early works of Thai literature, Thawathotsamat (Twelve Months) is the least well-known, perhaps because its language is hard to understand, perhaps because its eroticism is hard to take. The author may have been a late 15th century king. Chris Baker and Pasuk Phongpaichit present their translation-in-progress and thoughts on this poem’s  many meanings.

Chris Baker and Pasuk Phongpaichit have written widely on Thailand’s political economy, history, and literature including Unequal ThailandA History of ThailandA History of Ayutthaya, and The Tale of Khun Chang Khun Phaen. In 2017 they were awarded the Fukuoka Grand Prize.
