Type of Event: Annual Lecture
This lecture will discuss how global actors, including the aid industry, have produced domestic violence as a huge and ever growing problem in Palestine -- through forms of "best practice" measurement (only used in Third World countries); normative knowledge production and through the funding streams and other forms of symbolic power and expertise they wield in our context. The lecture will consider how this global apparatus specifically operates in the Palestinian context; how it unfurls on the ground in Occupied West Bank and the Palestinian Territories as state-building/developmentalism and in Gaza as humanitarian emergency and what it produces at the level of the everyday as well as the larger political work it achieves.
Rema Hammami is associate professor at anthropology in the Institute of Women's Studies, Birzeit University, Ramallah.
