Abstract

Rashid Khalidi and Raja Shehadeh will be in conversation on 'The Hundred Years' War on Palestine: The Nakba today, 72 years and counting'.

The Hundred Years' War on Palestine: A History of Settler Colonial Conquest and Resistance (Profile Books, 2020) is a landmark history from a foremost US historian of the Middle East, told through pivotal events and family history. Drawing on a wealth of untapped archival materials and the reports of generations of family members—mayors, judges, scholars, diplomats, and journalists—Rashid Khalidi upends accepted interpretations of the conflict, which tend, at best, to describe a tragic clash between two peoples with claims to the same territory. Instead, he traces a hundred years of colonial war on the Palestinians, waged first by the Zionist movement and then Israel, but backed by Britain and the United States, the great powers of the age.

In Going Home: A Walk Through Fifty Years of Occupation (Profile Books, 2019), Raja Shehadeh takes a series of journeys around his hometown of Ramallah. Set in a single day—the fiftieth anniversary of Israel’s occupation of the West Bank—the book is a powerful chronicle of the changing face of his city. Ramallah’s gardens and olive trees have been replaced by tower blocks; the Israeli occupation has entrenched itself in every aspect of movement, from the roads that cannot be used to the regulations that prevent people leaving the West Bank; and Islam is taking an ever greater role in people’s lives. Going Home is a moving and painfully visceral addition to Shehadeh’s series of personal histories of the occupation.
