Statement in support of Palestinian human rights and human rights organizations

We academics at SOAS University of London unequivocally condemn and reject the designation by the Israeli Ministry of Defence of six prominent Palestinian civil society groups as terrorist organisations. Among those are internationally renowned human rights advocacy organisations like Al-Haq, with which SOAS academics have long collaborated in the struggle for justice for Palestinians.

The question of Palestine is one of the most complex and protracted issues of our time. A country under military occupation with the largest body of refugees in the world, Palestine is a topic of tremendous political and cultural significance, involving regional and international players as well as an army of humanitarian and non-governmental organisations.

Statement from Valerie Amos, SOAS Director

The Director of the London Middle East Institute (LMEI), Dr Hassan Hakimian, has decided to step down after nearly ten years in the role, with effect from October 2019, and will be leaving SOAS shortly thereafter.
