Summary

On February 01, 2021, Myanmar's experiment with democracy came to an abrupt end as the military forcibly ousted the freshly elected National League for Democracy (NLD) government in a coup. Ever since, indiscriminate violence by the military has led to the death of over 800 people and intensified Myanmar's various ethnic armed insurgencies. The coup has generated organised resistance in the form of the National Unity Government (NUG) that seeks to bring together communities from across ethnic, religious, and linguistic lines into a democratic, federal union. In this years WSD Handa Distinguished Lecture, Dr. Sasa lays out the vision of the NUG, the challenges it faces, and how the international political environment impacts the situation on the ground in Myanmar.

Biography:

Dr. Sasa is the Union-Cabinet Minister of International Cooperation and Spokesperson of the National Unity Government of Myanmar and former Myanmar’s Special Envoy to the United Nations. He is main campaign manager for NLD during 2020 Myanmar’s General election and about to take senior role at the Centre Government of Myanmar before the military coup on 1st February and after the coup he became the face, voice and leader against military junta in Myanmar.
