Join us for a discussion with Javed Akhtar, Indian poet, screenplay writer and lyricist, about popular cinema, his own film songs, his Urdu poetry lineage, tradition and creativity and the dynamic changes in the Bombay film industry.


Javed Akhtar ( @Javedakhtarjadu) is an Indian poet, lyricist and scriptwriter. He is a mainstream writer of popular cinema and some of his most successful work has been as one part of the duo known as Salim-Javed. He has served as member of the Upper House of Parliament (Rajyasabha), is a recipient of several civilian awards including the Padma Bhushan (2007) and the Sahitya Academy Award for Literature as well as five National Film Awards. His own poetry has been translated in English, French and various Indian language .


Sangeeta Datta ( @DattaSangeeta) is an independent filmmaker, musician and cultural commentator. She is the founder-director of BAITHAKUK. Following her award winning feature film Life Goes On, her new film Bird of Dusk has just premiered at British Film Institute. Her books on Indian cinema and Tagore include BFI World Director Series: Shyam Benegal and the forthcoming 100 Essential Indian Films (Rowman and Littlewood.
