This workshop will include a series of papers on aspects of the history of Britain-Nepal relations, to celebrate 200 years of official Britain-Nepal ties, culminating in a lecture by John Whelpton. The workshop will be chaired by Professor David Gellner, Professor of Social Anthropology and a Fellow of All Souls College, University of Oxford. The Bicentenary Public Lecture will be delivered by John Whelpton, entitled ‘The Limits of Nationalism: Political Identity in Nepal and the British Isles’.

The workshop is organised with support from: All Souls College, Oxford; Britain-Nepal Academic Council; SOAS South Asia Institute.

Biography

John Whelpton is a well-known historian of Nepal, author of Jang Bahadur in Europe (1983), Kings, Soldiers and Priests: Nepalese Politics and the Rise of Jang Bahadur Rana (1991), People, Politics and Ideology: Democracy and Social Change in Nepal (1999, with the late Martin Hoftun and William Raeper), and A History of Nepal (2005).
