Speaker Biography

Dr Tholkappiyan Thirumavalavan is a Tamil politician, a social activist, Member of Parliament and the President of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (Liberation Panther Party) party in the state of Tamil Nadu in India. He is an influential Dalit leader who fought for social justice outside of electoral politics but changed his position and has been active in electoral politics since 1999. At the national level, Thirumavalavan is one of the few Dalit leaders who support social justice for Dalits and other minorities. His core political value is about ending caste-based oppression of the Dalits and others oppressed caste groups. Thirumavalavan is a supporter of Tamil nationalist movements, and his theorisation of Tamil nationalism is a social force to elimination caste oppression amongst Tamils. Thirumavalavan is a federalist and a staunch critic of Hindutva politics.
