Calum's PhD research, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, is an ethnographic portrait of the working lives of Members of Parliament in Malawi, and draws upon extensive fieldwork interviewing and shadowing MPs in both parliamentary and constituency settings. Calum considers the shape of the political career in Malawi, and how the workings of electoral democracy look and feel to 'the professionals,' in order to reflect on broader questions of parliamentary performance, democracy and democratisation.
