This thesis will explore the development of one of the unique theological traditions of the Assyrian Church of the East, namely the treatment of the Sign of the Cross as one of the seven sacraments of the church. Whilst this doctrine is first articulated by Abdisho of Nisibis in the thirteenth century, the Church’s theology of the Cross is clearly 'pseudo-sacramental.' and this is perhaps most clear in Isaac of Nineveh’s eleventh treatise on the Cross in the Second Part of his works. My research will explore the ways this develops in the tradition. Through this particular case study this thesis will offer some insight into the unique sacramental theology of the Assyrian Church more widely.
