PhD Research

My research aims to extend the research on gender and Internet technologies by bringing 'the family' into this field. I argue that the impact of Internet technologies on gender relations could be mediated through the process as to how the technologies influence the family structure. I choose to conduct an ethnographic research on a Chinese 'Taobao village' wherein the majority of villagers make a living by selling crafts in the form of family firms via the global largest e-commerce marketplace Taobao platform. This research aims to study how may e-commerce change the gender and age based hierarchies (gender-age system) in patrilineal families by addressing three tiers of questions. (1) How does the adoption of e-commerce changes livelihoods of rural families? (2) How do rural households allocate productive and reproductive work to family members of different genders and ages? (3) How do individual family members perform gender distinctly at home office and the private spheres of home?
