Biography

Bukola Aluko-Kpotie is Guinness Nigeria Research Fellow in the Languages and Cultures of Africa department at SOAS, University of London, where her writing and research focuses on the impacts of everyday urban cultural practices on community engagement programmes and government policies in Nigeria, West Africa.

Her recently completed field research, titled Designs for Life, was nominated for The Flourish Prizes by students of the Lagos Business School in 2015. The research, which involved collaborating with local artisans and training female carpenters, investigated the interplay between everyday cultural experiences and gender norms, and notions of social change and community engagement in the city of Lagos.

Bukola is also the curator of the Archiving Lagos Project for a community museum in the heart of the city. The project is creating a repository of pictures documenting contemporary life in Lagos from the perspective of marginalized groups.

She is the recipient of fellowships and research support from the University of Texas, Austin.
