This research project aims to explore the extent to which the gendered logic, discourse and practice of protection, in the cases of the Arab Gulf states of Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, underpin the recent introduction of mandatory military service. Arguing against prevalent accounts that study state-society relations through the lens of rentierism, I propose an alternative, by examining discourses of protection, from their historical roots of states as 'protectorates' to its present conception in the formation of military service, in order to theorize how a specific construction of ‘military masculinities’ intended for the protection of the citizenry, can both sustain and endorse state legitimacy.
