PhD Research

The aim of the research is to establish the extent to which the five exhibitions of Chinese art held at the Whitechapel Art Gallery in the years of the first four decades of the twentieth century - in 1901,1913,1922, 1933 and 1934 - lock into the trajectory of the history of Chinese art objects in the United Kingdom and more generally in Europe and the USA. The networks of lenders to the exhibitions, their relationships with the organisers of the exhibitions and the objects themselves, with their provenance and meanings to their owners will all be investigated.
