Biography

Nobuya Haraguchi is Senior Research and Industrial Policy Officer at the Department of Policy, Research and Statistics of UNIDO in Vienna and Team Leader of the Research Group in the Department. He leads UNIDO’s country diagnostic work and various research and publication projects. In 2018 he led the country diagnostic for the Kyrgyz Republic and production of the report Structural Change for Inclusive and Sustainable Industrial Development. He has published widely on structural change, patterns of manufacturing and industrial policy and practice. Recent publications include articles in journals, such as World Development (2017), and chapter contributions to key reference books, such as Efficiency, Finance and Varieties of Industrial Policy (2016) and Handbook of Industry and Development (2016). He was a co-editor of the book Structural Change and Industrial Development in the BRICS (2015). Before joining UNIDO, he taught macroeconomics at St. John’s University in the United States. He holds a PhD from SOAS.

At SOAS Economics, Nobuya Haraguchi is working with Dr Antonio Andreoni on a project assessing the impact of export promotion policies on the Ethiopian manufacturing sector. This project developed out of the Competitive Industries and Innovation Programme (CIIP) coordinated by the World Bank and involves Dr Abdi Yuya Ahmad and Dr Moges Tufa Adinew from the Adama Science and Technology University, Ethiopia.
