Biography

Aaron’s experience is in international law, trade law, human rights law, environmental law, and legal theory. He advises national governments, private institutions, and international organisations on international law and policy issues, particularly in relation to climate change, energy, natural resources, and trade. Aaron has published in each of these fields. He has also been involved in several research projects with United Nations agencies and the World Bank.

Aaron’s current research interests are in historico-philosophical and post-colonial approaches to international law and, specifically, in examining how international law shapes perceptions about the environment. He is an Assistant Editor of the London Review of International Law, and the Transnational Environmental Law journals.

Before joining SOAS, he taught at the London School of Economics and Political Science. Prior to a career in academia, Aaron was a trade, environment, and foreign policy adviser for the Australian Government from 2009 to 2014. In this role, he was involved in the negotiation of international agreements in these areas. He also worked on development of several domestic legislative instruments, and managed several funds and programmes. Before that, he practised as a commercial lawyer for a number of multinational firms between 2005 to 2008, during which he litigated complex matters in appellate courts across Europe, Asia, and the Pacific region. He has also worked as a lawyer for the United Nations. Aaron is admitted as a barrister and solicitor in Australia.
