Biography

In more than a decade as a journalist with BBC News – from Bush House to Broadcasting House
– Mahfuz Sadique has been a foreign news correspondent; radio presenter on World Service;
television producer on World News; social media and digital content producer; and a news editor.
Starting in print newsrooms early on, after a brief stint in corporate banking at Citi, since 2007,
Mahfuz has been working on Peabody, BAFTA, Radio Academy and Emmy award-winning BBC
programmes, stories and coverage ranging from the Rohingya refugee crisis, Rana Plaza factory
collapse, war crimes trials, the rise of Isis, the Arab Uprisings, atheist blogger killings, Calais
Jungle camp dismantling, MH17 airplane investigation as well as numerous general elections and
referendums ranging from Brexit to Bangladesh.

Mahfuz is currently working on a book exploring the political economy of the idea of progress in
the Global South, through the contradicting characters in his reporting from Bangladesh. His
writings have been published in two anthologies, and his journalism is now part of several major
research works on Islamist political movements in South Asia. Mahfuz’s current research,
reporting and writing interests include the frontiers of digital governance and the limits of open
data as public good; the political battles over public history in South Asia; and examining a
contradictions in the emerging global Muslim middle class identity.

Mahfuz has a Master’s in Public Policy from King’s College London and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

Mahfuz is a Governor of the Christopher Hatton, an outstanding-rated school in Central London; a Trustee at Camden Giving, a charity working with youth and inequality; Equality and Diversity Co-rep at the BBC London branch of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ). He also guest lectures on media and the SDG goals at Utrecht University.
