- The Engaging Politics of Refusal: Transition and Resistance in Tunisia since the Arab Uprisings
- Year of Study:
Joshua Rigg gained his BA from the University of Oxford in geography and his MRes from SOAS in politics. Joshua's MRes thesis drew on archive material to examine the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT) as a site of both co-option and contention during the Ben Ali regime, with a particular focus on the general strike of 1978.
Since 2015 Joshua has been a PhD candidate in the Department of Politics and International Studies at SOAS studying resistance and contentious politics in post-revolutionary Tunisia. His PhD fieldwork (2016-18) examined the multifarious ways in which activists in Tunisia have pursued and made sense of resistance after the Tunisian revolution. It looks at how activists have sought to pursue political change through a continued rejectionist position, and thereby developed a critical engagement with Tunisia’s uneven landscape of ‘transition’.
