George's research expertise and main interests focus on the development of speech perception in infancy, considering both the types of input that learners receive and the mechanisms that they use to identify the speech sounds of their native language. He uses corpora of caregivers' speech, detailed acoustic analyses and computational models to explore how and why speakers alter their vowel productions in interactions with children (child-directed speech) and the extent to which statistical mechanisms (distributional learning) account for infants' phonological knowledge within the first year of life.
