PhD Research

The aim of this research is to critically analyse how two private galleries have represented contemporary Australian Aboriginal art in London. Unlike museums, commercial galleries have received very little scholarly attention nor has their role in assigning and creating value for a relatively new and fast-developing category of contemporary art been analysed in any significant detail. This study aims to closely examine the exhibition histories, personal collecting preferences and biographies of both gallery directors and their associated curators. It also sets these factors within the context of post-war cultural policy agendas of the Australian government and the larger changes in the global artworld since the 1980’s.
