PhD Research

My research is about understanding the formation of national identity in Chad. I explore how ordinary people develop a sense of ‘we-feeling’ towards their political community, resulting in the formation of a collective identity. Using life stories, my research emphasises the importance of shared values, common narratives and popular myths in bringing together a political community, which is otherwise depicted as fractured along ethnic and religious identities. Such an account of collective identity allows me to shift the concern away from religious and ethnic differences, in order to grasp popular feelings and how they inform the idea of belonging to a national political community.
