Biography

I studied History at the University of Milan (BA), the University of Pisa (MA) and the Scuola Normale of Pisa (Diploma). I took my PhD in History at SOAS. Over the years I have been working on the Italian state-led oil company during Fascism, the Anglo-Boer War, colonial Lesotho, Portuguese and Dutch colonialism in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, Renaissance geography, the plantation complex and the Atlantic slave trade, missionary history. My main research focus, however, is the history of the Southern African Highveld between the sixteenth and the nineteenth century. I study African political institutions and political thought, rituals, warfare, slavery, urbanism and settlements, tales and traditions. I am currently working on my first book, based on the PhD thesis.
