Research

My research interests are the comparative and typological analysis of Meroitic and Ancient Egyptian phonology. A British Academy funded project on the use of language in claims of demon possession and the role of language in religion. I am also involved in the Nubian Languages and Cultures Project which is documenting and describing principally the Nobiin Nubian language. I have conducted fieldwork in Sudan on endangered language documentation and development of teaching materials for revitalisation efforts. I am further interested in the role of iconicity in phonology within the framework of Cognitive Linguistics.
