Born in York and raised in Italy, Martin studied Ancient History and Egyptology at UCL, then began study of Assyriology at Leipzig University. He then did an MPhil and PhD at the University of Cambridge, and from 2006 to 2010 he was a junior research fellow in Assyriology at St John's College. Since October 2010 he is a British Academy postdoctoral research fellow in the Dept of Near and Middle East, his project being to study the individual style of Babylonian poems from the first millennium BC. Martin is the author or a volume on Babylonian in the Teach Yourself series.
