Professor S Janakarajan


S.Janakarajan, an Economist, currently a Professor at the Madras Institute of Development Studies MIDS, Adyar, obtained Ph.D from MIDS (University of Madras), Chennai. He has done his Post-Doctoral programme at the Cornell University, USA, during 1992-93 and subsequently a worked as a Visiting Professor at the Queen Elizabeth House, Oxford University, UK during 1995-96.
His areas of interest are development studies, rural development and agrarian institutions, climate change, adaptation and disaster risk reduction, water management and irrigation institutions, urban water, conflicts and conflict resolution, environment, urban and peri-urban issues, and markets.
He has published several books and many papers in national and international journals. He is the author of the 'Cauvery Family', (an initiative towards conflict resolution) which he started in 2003 that has brought together farmers of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu States to resolve the most vexed inter-state water dispute in the history of contemporary India through farmer to farmer dialogue. The Cauvery family still survives and the farmers of both states have met so far 19 times in the last 10 years. They are in the process of finding a lasting solution.
His current areas of research interest are Climate Change, Vulnerability analysis and Adaptation and urban water. He is the President of South Asia Consortium for Inter-Disciplinary Studies in Water (SaciWATERs), located in Hyderabad India, member of the GWP, and a member of the Steering Committee of the Forum for Policy Dialogue on Water Conflicts in India.
