Course overview

This 2 week course is aimed at complete beginners and aims to provide an introduction to contemporary Persian. By the end of the course, students will have covered basic grammatical constructions and acquired an essential working vocabulary allowing them to communicate within a limited range of situations in which learners are likely to find themselves. The language is presented together with the cultural context in which it is used so that learners are able to appreciate such things as appropriateness and linguistic etiquette when interaction takes place in the target language. This course is delivered by the Language Centre

Method

The course is taught in English and Persian with coverage of the four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing, and a balance between communicative activities, structure practice and grammar.

Our online courses are delivered through a blended learning model: this is composed of 15 hours of live online structured lessons with the teacher, plus a minimum of 5 hours of blended learning. This is a guided independent learning supported by complementary material and regular feedback from the tutor. The course objective will be achieved within the course.

Persian Beginners 1:

  • use the Persian alphabet
  • greet and introduce yourself and others
  • use numbers 0-100
  • ask and give personal information
  • say where you live
  • say where you come from
  • talk about your nationality
  • talk about jobs
  • talk about your family
  • use expressions of time (hours, days and months)
  • talk about hobbies and leisure time
  • describe your likes and dislikes
  • order food and drinks in a Persian restaurant
  • talk about future activities

This Persian Beginners 1 course is aimed at complete beginners, no previous knowledge is required. Enrol on Persian Beginners 1 Online Semi-Intensive Course (43206) July 2023. Please note that places are first come first served. Enrolments are taken until the course is fully booked, or up to midnight 10 July, whichever is soonest.

Continuing your study

This Persian Beginners 1 course is equivalent to the 10 week Persian Beginners 1 level. Students who complete this course may be able to join a Beginners 2 for our next term starting October 2023, or a future term at SOAS Language Centre.
