SOAS University of London

Simge Erdogan, Boğaziçi University, Year Abroad

Through my SOAS experience, I have realised that as long as I am eager to learn, I don’t have any limits.

Erasmus Exchange January - June 2013

Which courses did you study at SOAS?

  • Middle East in the Period of the Crusades
  • Modern Japan
  • Islamic Architecture

Why did you choose SOAS?

Before I came to SOAS I knew that SOAS is one of the best universities to study history. After I came here I have realized that SOAS also offers chance to specialize in different fields, geographies and cultures. Moreover, SOAS is one of the few places that one might find a chance to get in touch with not only people from all over the world but also different cultures, languages and lives. If one wants to really understand what SOAS is, he/she should be a part of it.

What did you enjoy most about your studies at SOAS?

SOAS encouraged me to think, read and write critically and creatively. After my academic studies at SOAS, now I feel more confident to make any research and to raise my own arguments. In and outside the classroom my lecturers and tutors have supported my studies and they did their best to help me to develop my abilities.

How would you describe living in London?

In my opinion, for students’ academic studies, London offers a wide range of opportunities with its museums, art galleries and libraries. For students’ social lives on the other hand, London has an endless energy. My experience while living in London showed me how people originally coming from different parts of the world manage to live together in harmony. That’s why I believe it is possible for every individual to be a part of London since London welcomes everyone.
