Ever wondered how to begin a project? What does 'Research' mean? or Simply how to turn a good idea into a well formed report? Whatever the predicament, at whatever the level, in both academic and professional settings, the Research Awareness: Design and Methodology summer school provides a unique opportunity to develop and hone your ability to conceptualise and develop your research skills.
We will tackle what it means to be a researcher from the ground up, starting with the fundamental building blocks of what constitutes 'research', how to go about it well and what pitfalls to avoid.
Your course leader is Dr J Simon Rofe, co-instructor of the biggest Research Methodology course globally through a Coursera MOOC, and for this summer school course, he is joined by fellow SOAS scholar Dr Ashley Cox. Together they will curate an exciting approach drawing upon the latest academic practice in learning and research design, and SOAS's wonderful local resources in the shape of the British Library, the British Museum, the Welcome Trust and Crick Institute.
No prior knowledge or experience in research methods is required to take this course, but the course will be particularly relevant for those who have to conduct research as part of their higher education studies but do not perhaps have access to research methods courses, or for those who feel like they would like additional support for self-improvement.
There will be no formal teaching during the third week. During this time, students complete their final assignments and tutors will be available to provide advice and guidance. If you do not wish to remain in London and make use of SOAS facilities during this time, tutors will be available via e-mail or virtual drop-in sessions.
On successful completion of the course, a student should be able to demonstrate the ability to:
- Their understanding that different methods and approaches to research reflect a range of intellectual traditions and societal interests
- The ability to assess which methods are suitable for their enquiries
- The ability to design a research project
- The ability to critically engage with discussions surrounding the quality and integrity of research
- Their readiness to tackle further, advanced, consideration of approaches to research
Students will be assessed through a series of e-tivities that will meet the agreed learning outcomes. An e-tivity is a term for any form of online assessment; they can take many forms from multiple choice questions, a quiz, a presentation. The key facets are a clearly stated Purpose, a Task for participants to undertake, a Response which enables students to receive feedback on their Task, and an Outcome which clarifies what has been learnt and enables us to move on. In short it just a way of describing assessment in multiple forms.
15 SOAS credits
This is course is worth 15 credits in the UK system. 15 credits is equivalent to 4 credits in the US system and 7.5 ECTS in the European system.
If you intend to transfer credit to your home institution, please check the requirements with them before you apply. We will be happy to assist you in any way we can, however please be aware that the decision to transfer credit rests with your home institution.

Teaching & Learning
The course is designed to provide a blended pedagogic experience to students. In other words, learning will go beyond face to face class time.
Through a series of learning experiences students will engage with a number of salient topics in Research Awareness: Design and Methodology.
Each topic will be supported by tailored learning materials which will include a range of textual, documentary, audio and visual as appropriate. Readings have been chosen and packaged to have a guiding question, pop quiz questions, and an overall summary, as well as being divided into Essential and Desirable reading.

How to Apply
In order to join the Academic Summer School, students should meet the following entry requirements:
- A university student or a graduate at the time of attending. Professional experience can be acknowledged as equivalent to a university qualification.
- Participants must be 18 or over at the time of attendance.
- Fluency in English language is recommended for non-credit courses, but essential for SOAS Accredited courses. Proficiency can be demonstrated through:
- IELTS, 6.5 overall or higher, with at least 6 in all sub scores.
- TOEFL Paper based test we require a minimum of 583 with minimum 53 in all skills and for TOEFL Internet Based Test we require a minimum of 93 with minimum 20 in all skills.
- Pearson Test of English a score of 59-64
- Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) Grade B
- If you have studied in an English speaking institution, or have courses taught at your university in English (excluding English language courses) you may meet our requirements without having to supply a certificate. Evidence of this will either need to be included on a transcript or letter from your university.

Once you have paid the £40 application fee and submitted the online application form, you will be informed as to whether you have a place on the summer school within 5 working days. Please do not pay your tuition fee prior to having received your offer letter.
