After completing his doctorate in Social Anthropology at the London School of Economics, Dr. Pinney taught at the School of Oriental and African Studies, Australia National University and the University of Chicago. He is now Senior Lecturer in Material Culture at University College London. He is also co-editor of both History and Anthropology and the Journal of Material Culture, as well as Chairperson of the Royal Anthropological Institute's Photographic Committee. His recent publications include a monograph, Camera Indica: the social life of Indian photographs, and co-edited volumes: Beyond aesthetics: Art and the technologies of enchantment; Pleasure and the nation: the history, politics and consumption of public culture in India; and Photography's other histories. His current research concerns the history and interpretation of objects travelling between Asia and Europe. Dr. Pinney advises the project team on material culture research.
