Michael Aram Tarr completed his Master of Fine Arts in Photography at the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI), in 1994. During his undergraduate studies at the SFAI he became interested in ethnographic photography under the guidance of the photographer and visual anthropologist John Collier Jr. After receiving his MFA, he has completed several photographic projects in India, including work on Kathakali dance dramas and the culture surrounding them, the Sufi culture in the Nizamuddin Dargha, and the traditional cultural landscape of Assam. In 2002 he spent two months in Arunachal Pradesh documenting a major festival. His work has been exhibited in the USA and in India. In the Tribal Transitions Project, Mr. Tarr will be the field research photographer, along with conducting a study of photographs from Arunachal Pradesh held in museums and other collections in the UK.
