Increasingly the environmental science community is recognising the importance of the role of groundwater in the Earth System. This includes both the deep earth and the changing hydrological cycle, with its implications for water resources, engineering properties and water quality. The role of groundwater in non aquifers, in volcanism and in carbon storage all present new science problems to solve. Sustainable management of water resources, especially in extreme events, in an integrated manner requires new understanding of scale issues and how to characterise these using new modelling methodologies. The talk will discuss these challenges and the research being undertaken to address them.
